Human life is very interesting. I was recently discussing the death of a friend with a colleague at work. Thinking about it, I stated that the most amazing thing is that if she had been told a few months back that she had only six months to live, she would not have believed it. She was an extrovert, extremely nice and caring, very friendly and warm. Everybody liked her. She was in good health, until a minor illness that eventually led to death. I wondered aloud why God did not tell humans when they would die. My colleague agreed with me that it was probably because we would refuse to live and be obsessed with death.

Today, I invite us to live! God has deemed it fit to remove knowledge of the time of death from us. However, He has always enjoined us to live. Jesus said, ‘The thief comes not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly’. John 10:10

He wants us to have life abundantly or an abundant life. We are born to live! However, some of us tend to be very conservative with the living of life. Some of us, like me, find it difficult to throw all caution to the wind and live fully, due to many different opinions of life and how it should be lived. Most of us have wrong mindsets that tend to lead us away from the enjoyment of life, in the fear that we would lose our eternity in the adventure of pleasures. Before now, I must admit that I have approached life rather carefully. Nothing wrong in that. Human tendencies are mostly towards excess than temperance. I have always been reserved in enjoying the pleasures of life, because I have feared that I might enjoy too much and get carried away from the things that matter most.

Nowadays, I am learning that everything is about discipline and control. So while all things may be lawful, not all things are expedient. While entertainment is not all wrong, the time, energy, resources spent on it have to be carefully regulated, to ensure that the balance is maintained between indulgence and faith. We need to live responsibly! Do not be drunk with wine, but be filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18)

I love this song that sort of captures what I am learning to do now, in the afternoon / early evening of my life – ‘How you live’ a song by Point of Grace. I have added the lyrics and a YouTube link.

Enjoy! Live Responsibly! We have only this one life to live.

Wake up to the sunlight
With your windows open
Don’t hold in your anger or leave things unspoken
Wear your red dress
Use your good dishes
Make a big mess and make lots of wishes
Have what you want
But want what you have
And don’t spend your life lookin’ back

Turn up the music
Turn it up loud
Take a few chances
Let it all out
You won’t regret it
Lookin’ back from where you have been
Cause it’s not who you knew
And it’s not what you did
It’s how you live

So go to the ballgames
And go to the ballet
And go see your folks more than just on the holidays
Kiss all your children
Dance with your wife
Tell your husband you love him every night
Don’t run from the truth
Cause you can’t get away
Just face it and you’ll be okay

Turn up the music
Turn it up loud
Take a few chances
Let it all out
You won’t regret it
Lookin’ back from where you have been
Cause it’s not who you knew
And it’s not what you did
It’s how you live

Oh wherever you are and wherever you’ve been
Now is the time to begin

So give to the needy
And pray for the grieving
E’en when you don’t think that you can
Cause all that you do is bound to come back to you
So think of your fellow man
Make peace with God and make peace with yourself
Cause in the end there’s nobody else

Turn up the music
Turn it up loud
Take a few chances
Let it all out
You won’t regret it
Lookin’ back from where you have been
Cause it’s not who you knew
And it’s not what you did
It’s how you live

Cause it’s not who you knew
And it’s not what you did
It’s how you live
